Black Hmong batik art Class.
Book our multi-day trek if you are interested in local handicrafts or want to learn new experiences from the Hmong ethnic minority batik art crafts.
The batik art classes will last between 2 – 2.5 hours and take place in Lao Chai or Ta Van villages. After you are finished drawing the batik art you will be able to bring it back home with you.
Batik art craft design is the oldest part of Hmong ethnic traditional clothing, some of our older generations are very skilled at drawing Hmong Batik Art. They use beeswax and use a piece of hemp fabric cloth to draw snail-shell patterns. When they finish drawing the pattern they then dye the cloth with indigo. After dying they sew that piece of hemp fabric cloth, with the batik art snail-shell pattern, onto their traditional arms clothing.
Nowadays, not many young Hmong girls know how to make Batik art because it’s one of the most difficult crafts for Hmong to learn. They usually only know how to embroider the traditional Hmong stitch pattern and clothing.
The young Hmong girls start to learn how to embroider at quite a young age. Their mother starts teaching them how to sew the pattern when they are 5 years old. In Hmong ethnic culture as a woman, it’s very important to know how to make traditional Hmong clothing. It is expected when a woman marries that she will know how to make some traditional Hmong clothing for her family.

My daughter and I really enjoyed our 2-3 hour batik workshop. We were shown how to do it and given as much time as we needed to draw our own designs and then go over them in wax using traditional tools. The lady that taught us was lovely and it was a very peaceful enjoyable experience in the incredible scenic Ta Van village. We have left them there for her soak in the indigo dye and then boil, she is sending them to our hotel when this is completed. The shop has some lovely pieces in it which are good value and very obviously authentic. Thank you to our lovely host and to sapaweather for organising.
