The Hmong sapa vietnam had emigration from China to Vietnam since the 19th century. When they first arrived in Vietnam they struggled to establish their community on the high mountains. By the time the hmong sapa vietnam arrived in Vietnam all the land did not belong to anyone so they went to the forest and found their properties by the old generation.
You can imagine that all the lands now in Sapa became ricefields used to be mountains and foresty, then the Hmong Sapa Vietnam ethnic minority group used grape hoe, pick mattock, weeding hoe, axe, and handsaw to build the rice fields.
They used their handsaw and axe to cut down all the trees then used the weeding hoe and pick mattock to dig dirt out and build the amazing rice field in Sapa. When the Hmong Sapa Vietnam finished building their rice fields they needed to collect the water irrigation from the mountains to go through the rice fields to make the soil softer and better for the rice, if the soil was very hard then it will not good for the rice. The Hmong ethnic minority group in Sapa grow their rice fields only once a year and the rice that they grow it’s only for their family use it. The Hmong Sapa Vietnam do not sell their rice to other companies.
These are some photos of the rice fields before there were no rice fields and after the Hmong Sapa Vietnam built their rice fields.
There are 4 different names for Hmong sapa Vietnam, Black Hmong, Green Hmong, White Hmong and Flower Hmong all these Hmong are the same trible but they just have different dress.
The Hmong Sapa Vietnam are farming and work as a tourist.
The Hmong culture is getting married at a pretty young age. The older generation encourages their children to be mary at age and help their family work on the farm.
The youngest age in Hmong culture to get Mary is 15 years old, when they get married at that age they will have their first kid when they are 16 years old. Hmong Sapa Vietnam if you are married when you are 20 to 30 years old, they think you are too old to get Mary and they are afraid that their children can not get husbands or wives. When the girl gets married she will move from her family to her husband’s family. If the boy is the oldest of the family his family will share the properties for him and his wife to build their own house and have their own family. The Hmong family only chose the youngest son to look after his family.
If you are a Hmong girl will not get any land from your parents, the Hmong sapa vietnam family think if you are a girl when you get mary you will some land from your husband that way the girl’s family will not share any land for their daughter.
For the Hmong, we have 2 options to get married.
Option 1 if the boy feels in love with that girl or dating then he will kidnap her to Mary.
Option 2 The boy’s family will arrange a marriage for him.
All the options marry in 3 days if the girl doesn’t want to marry him, she can return to her family. As you know in Hmong sapa vietnam culture it’s very important to have boys in the family, because if the parents only have girls in the future the girls will be married and no one will look after their parents. If a family do not have boys-only girls then they keep giving birth until they have boys, but if the parants do not have boys-only girls then they will adopt a boy.
